This summer our family has had the privilege to attend 3 farm to plate dinners at Topaz Farm on Sauvie Island. We have eaten local, wild caught salmon, roasted on cedar planks, celebrated corn with everything from corn espuma to corn fed beef, and eaten 6 different kinds of apples in one meal with varietals in everything from soup to dessert! The food was excellent as was the time together as an extended family. We also were in a beautiful place, one of my favorite in the world with rolling hills, a nearby river, and an ancient oak tree. This is a farm we have visited for years, picking strawberries, getting lost in the corn maze, and enjoying summer afternoons with a cold beverage after a hike.
There is something so holy and amazing in sharing a table with loved ones in a special pace and eating food from the land we are sitting on. Farmers Kat & Jim can point you to the field where the onions or fennel in the dish were grown. This connection to the earth, to family, to beauty while filling our senses with delicious tastes, amazing smells, the touch of the warm breeze, the sounds of the local bird population, and the sight of the beautiful vistas of the island is an act of worship for me.
It is a gift to slow down and enjoy these meals. To delight in every bite, every laugh, every change in the color of the setting sun. To know God with us in the moment.
As the season turns may you find delight in the sacredness of place and find was to celebrate family, the bounty of the earth, and the beauty of creation.
