This week we lit our last advent candle, celebrating love. Love comes in so many forms, all of them an extension or reflection of God’s love for us! My love of cheese is a delight in the creativity and wonder of humanity to make something so good. It’s a celebration of the senses we were created with and it’s a hope-filled reaction to the design of the world with cows and the rules of physical science that allow for the cheesemaking process. This is the theological reason behind my cheese advent calendar. One that is full of cheeses from the UK, so it reminds me of my family and special times with them. I love my family, these people who I have grown up with. I have so many memories of laughter, swimming in the North Sea, learning to avoid stinging nettles and how to treat the hives if I didn’t, and trying to capture sheep on my grandparents’ land.I love the history and heritage of the land of my birth. I have learned so much about life and the world and the fullness of who God is by standing in two different countries, belonging to two different peoples, as similar as we might be in so many ways. I am grateful for the ways the place where I am from and the people who are my family have shaped me.
The lesson of the cheese advent calendar is that love actually is all around when we start to look for it. This week in the hustle and bustle of the holiday celebrations I invite you to reflect on simple things, like a bite of cheese, and how that is a reflection of God’s deep and abiding love for us, one that we encounter in Christ, and in so much more!
