In the aftermath of the election several friends added me to Facebook groups for those disappointed in the result. In one group someone was advocating that people go back and delete any liberal or left leaning social media posts. They are afraid of reprisal by the government for an opinion. Saturday Night Live opened with a skit proclaiming that the whole cast had always supported President Trump and never made fun of him and had all voted for him. It was tongue in cheek, but it spoke to a real fear for many. For those who need to go back in the closet, who feel so unsafe they do need to change things we pray, and understand that self preservation matters.

After the election I changed my Facebook cover photo and profile picture to stand in solidarity with those on the margins. And our church is not going to take down our flags or rainbow windsock. We’ll keep being who we are, publicly and vocally. We who can stand in this space will do so with love and courage. We will build bridges of connection and care. And I truly believe this will make all the difference.

Blessings, Eilidh
