As part of our epic Bubble Family Girls  Spring Break Trip  in 2021 we went to Glass Beach in Northern California.  Due to historic dumping in the ocean and the current in this location the beach is known for its sea glass. At one time the beach was nearly all glass, now it is a mixture of glass and stones. One day, in the not too distant future, the beach will be just stones. This is because we don’t dump our trash in the ocean anymore and because people have taken glass from the beach. while we were there we saw several people with gallon ziplock bags filling up on sea glass. I made our group pick one piece each. I wanted to make sure the beach lasted just a little longer. And I know that when we got home we’d put our glass on a shelf, and probably forget about it. So one felt like a good memory and good stewardship.

We hunted on the beach for just the right piece. I actually think this made it more fun for us than taking a whole bunch of glass. Did I want that teal blue tiny piece? Or how about this white piece shaped like a heart? What about the bit that still looked like the end of a bottle with some ridges?  I wound up with the heart and even though it’s a common color every time I see it I am reminded that love is all around us.

I am sharing this story because sometimes a little is enough. Our culture is one of abundance and scarcity. We have so much and we fear lack. We often thoughtlessly take because we can, discarding the things when we get bored of it. This season as we engage in reading the bible as a community we are invited into another way of living. Our faith calls us to an examined, thoughtful life. May we all sink into what might be as we dwell in the word of God.
