Among the many challenges and struggles of this year, one very pleasant and unexpected surprise for me has been the opportunity to work on staff here in this parish. This opportunity was not one that I sought out, but one that dropped in my lap in a way that could only be described as providential. It was one of those rare times in life in which the stars aligned and the details effortlessly fell into place, as if to say clearly, “This is meant for you in this moment.” And so, in the midst of a very unique time in the life of this congregation, of any congregation, I was welcomed into this lovely community. Truly, it has been such a gift to be here. Though I’ve met only a few of you face-to-face, I have gotten to speak to some of you on the phone, hear about you, and be in virtual worship together. You have been kind, welcoming, generous, and abundantly gracious to me, sight unseen.
In this ongoing year of unexpected challenges and shifting priorities, I am experiencing more shifting. When I started in September, there seemed to be ample space and energy within myself and within my family unit to be able to accept this position and engage it in a life-giving way. As the months have unfolded, this has not remained the case. I am finding that the wisdom is true: in order to say “yes” to some things, I must say “no” to other things. After prayer and reflection, I have discerned that the most important “yes” I can say right now is to my family and my own wellbeing. It is with sadness that I must also resign my current position here at the Parish.
I will remain on staff through the end of the month, and will be in worship with you all this Sunday. I am so deeply grateful for this time I’ve been able to spend with you. I am especially grateful to Pastor Eilidh, who has been a fabulous leader, colleague, and support to me both personally and in this role at the church. I will hold you all close and be forever impacted by this experience with you. I am so excited for the future that lies ahead for this parish, and for the good work and growth that will unfold. You are in my prayers and warmest thoughts.
Thank you so much, Southeast Portland Parish! Though I never intended my time here to be so short, it has been a gift to me. May your life and work together continue to be rich, meaningful, and blessed!
-Jill
