Sometimes, on days when I need a moment, I crawl under my cozy comforter and just let my mind wander. The cat comes and curls up with me as my thoughts unfurl. Often here is when things I have been ignoring claim my attention and in my cocoon of comfort I can face them. This is also where ideas pop up. When I have set aside busyness and claim some peace for myself, creativity appears.

The rhythm of rest, of not doing, of simply being is biblical. Taking time to let our minds wander, our bodies relax, and our spirits find peace is vital to living full and deep lives. Even though I have learned this since I was a child, it is hard to practice in a world that seems to value what we do more than who we are.

Advent, with it’s cold days and dark nights is a perfect time to rest. This season is perfect for letting ourselves imagine and dream. It is a time for thinking of star light, angels, babies, shepherds, and wise ones. It is a time for meeting peace deep within.

May you find time to rest and be and in those moments find the glimmers of God’s holy light.
