This week there was REALLY BIG Methodist news, except it wasn’t. Others have written about the details of the plan and how it has to go through our church governance structure (along with a bunch of other potential plans) before we really know anything about anything.

We got calls and emails from reporters asking about how we as clergy were reacting to the news and where our church stands on issues of human sexuality and inclusion.

Here’s what Jayde and I collaborated on to send as a response:

We as a Parish affirm our LGBTQIA+ siblings in membership, marriage, and ministry.  We are committed to being a place that welcomes and celebrates people of all gender expressions and identities and sexual orientations. Whatever eventually happens in May we will continue to live out our understanding of God’s love and radical hospitality.

It is amazing to be part of a community that understands who we are and our way of living together. The Parish is not all of one mind on all things and we have an array of theological understandings and political views, and yet we have coalesced around a sense of welcome, which has long been in the DNA of Trinity and was one of the key beliefs as we began SFC.

I will watch the upcoming General Conference with deep interest and high emotions as it is the United Methodist Church that has formed me in so many way. I don’t know what the future holds for any of us as a church, but I do know that here in the Parish we are living out who God made us to be in faith and hope.
