This week Christian author and conversation starter Rachel Held Evans passed away. Her words and leadership touched many people and my Facebook feed was full of folks sharing meaningful quotes from her work.
One quote that stood out to me was:
I love this because it so perfectly describes what we do at dinner each week. Who is at the table varies, but every time we are a motley crew with all these random things in common. We might not seem like folks who would hang out, and yet something amazing happens when we all show up together. We come because we long for something, be it connection, deeper faith, support, love, sustenance, or something else. The wonderful thing about dinner is that we do always have room for more, adding on tables. And I always get questions about how we organize the food, but the thing is we don’t. What people bring is what we have. Sometimes it’s a cohesive meal, sometimes it’s all salads or lots of pasta. No matter what ends up on the table it is always enough. I do think how we gather as a community has endured for 5 years because it does capture what the kindom of God is like. I am so thankful to Rachel Held Evans for putting these words together and capturing the beautiful, holy simplicity of our life together.
While my heart aches for the loss of Rachel’s wisdom I hope you will join me in praying for her husband Dan and their two young children, a boy who is 3 and a little girl who will turn 1 this month.
