After almost 9 weeks off I am on day two of being back at work. It was so nice to be away during a much needed period of doing not much else other than being myself. This was especially true during our three weeks in Scotland with one of the people I love best in the world, my cousin. She has two amazing little boys and we spent a lot of our time finding the perfect stick, testing out the splashaility of any and all water, and playing footie. Well they did that, I basically watched and went along to the park, the beach, the wood, and the grassy lawn. Being all about the moment and just enjoying the sunshine and the way small people discover their world was a rare treat. It can’t have been easy having house guests for so long, even though my daughter Paige and I tried our best to be easy company, yet my cousin and her husband never made us feel like we were in the way or a burden.
My cousin is one of those people who many times in my life has shown up with the thing I needed most. It is so amazing to have people stand in the places of weariness or uncertainty with you. And this is why we spend part of our time at dinner on Sunday nights checking in. It’s why we dedicate part of our time on Sunday mornings to visiting over coffee. To know and be known, to share the good times and the hard times is a beautiful and holy act of surrender. We need real and deep relationships in our lives.
I’m happy to be back and to be in this moment with the people of the Southeast Portland Parish knowing and being know, but part of my heart will always be in Queensferry, where four special people are enjoying the adventures of Lightning McQueen and eating chocolate cookies.
