The All Blacks are widely considered one of the best rugby teams in the world.  They are the pride of New Zealand, with one of the best records in test match rugby.  The Black Ferns are their sister team, also known for their success.  Both teams have rosters of diverse players. And both teams understand the need to have players who are different from one another.  There are more muscular players and faster lithe players. There are players who give passionate interviews to the media and quieter players.  Part of the teams’ success is how they include these different players to create a cohesive team. To celebrate this the teams recently launched a campaign with black jerseys that reveal a rainbow when the fabric is pulled. This was not a subtle campaign, launched in Tokyo during Pride, this jersey is a statement about acceptance especially of LGBTQ persons.

I am so thankful to be a part of two communities of faith that understand that diversity is strength.  Both parts of the Southeast Portland Parish, Sellwood Faith Community and Trinity United Methodist Church welcome anyone who comes into our doors.  And when you do come in those doors you will find trans people and gay people and maybe some lesbians and a whole lot of straight people and some folks who don’t really think much about their orientation and kids who are still figuring out who they are. We are better and stronger as a parish because of this.  Our denomination may fight about who is allowed in.  Our country may still be grappling with who is allowed to be called family, but we here at Southeast Portland Parish are very clear.  LGBTQIA2S+ people are welcome, are valued and loved, and are part of what makes our parish beautiful. No matter what the powers that be may say we here will keep on calling for inclusion of all people and will do all in our power to create safe community for anyone God sends our way.

Diversity is Strength.
