One of the coolest parts of my job is that I get to hang out with everyone.  On Tuesday mornings I start my day with an electric crew of folks parsing bible passages.  On Sunday nights I listen in as the teenagers argue over youtube videos.  On a recent walk in the neighborhood I encountered two of our kiddos walking home from school and got to learn all about their Chinese language immersion homework.  Last month, on a visit to the home of one of the saints of the church, I enjoyed hearing all about her beautiful collection of valentines from the 1930’s.  I pass every Wednesday morning with  group of 40-something moms and thanks to them my lashes have never been so full!  I’ve begun to appreciate the beauty and soulfulness of the harmonica when played by one of the older gentlemen in the church.

My life is so incredibly rich because of the people in the Southeast Portland Parish.  I count myself so fortunate to be able to learn from 80 year olds and 8 year olds on the same day.  I love the sense of pride from the kiddo who wants to show me her room and all of her books which is reflected in the 60 year old who wants to show me pictures of his family.

God shines through each person, and only together in our diversity and uniqueness, in our commonalities and love can we begin to even catch a glimpse of the divine.
