As we continue to seek out how to live faith together as a community we are embracing some new rituals around the table. As we transition from dinner to music and close our music time before we leave we are adding some words of centering and blessing. We haven’t found exactly the right words or way of expressing these moments so I bought a new book recently to help us and I’ve asked our Minister of Liturgy, Laura to contemplate what these spaces in our gathering time might look like.
I’ve really enjoyed reading the book Saying Grace and looking at ways different people express gratitude or mark the gathering of the community at table. There is something sacred, ancient, and basic in gathering over a meal together. It’s proven that eating with others lengthens one’s lifespan. It’s a basic part of the way we are made to share a meal. Even adding words to honor and mark our time together in gratitude is s tradition that crosses time and culture. While our church community might be newer, our practices are timeless. While we might be making small changes to our gatherings, these changes are rooted in ancient human practice.
As we continue to follow God and to craft our time together in innovative and meaningful ways we resonate with the eternal and universal.
